Individual Note: BIOGRAPHY
Carl grew up in the Ozark foothills of North-central Arkansas, along the banks of the Myatt Creek, southeast of Saddle, AR. During the 1920s, his father moved the family to Thayer, MO, but continued to farm the rich bottom land in Arkansas. In 1930 Carl was 21 and driving a truck for the Arkansas State Highway Department. A year later, he and Doris were married.
By 1933 Carl and Doris had moved back to Fulton Co., Arkansas and were living in a small rock house on the Myatt property. During these early years of the depression, Carl worked at whatever he could to provide for his growing family...farming with his father, cutting and splitting firewood and fence posts, driving a school bus and other labor as was available. The family moved again in 1936 into a small log cabin on the Myatt property. Later that year Carl began working for the Frisco Railroad, starting in the switchyard at Thayer. In 1938 the family moved back to the family farm in Thayer, next to the cemetary. Another move in '40 or '41 to the "Champ Clark" place was necessary when John and Minnie decided to return to the farm in Thayer.
In the Spring of 1944, Carl and Doris purchased an 80-acre farm east of Thayer on Highway 142. Carl continued with Frisco as Brakeman and Conductor on the Springfield to Memphis route. He retired in 1968 with 32 years of service.
